MEDIA FAIR

On Wednesday, June 9th (Yesterday), in our english class at YIS we had a “media fair”. We used both our classroom and Ms.Barbour’s classroom and were able to walk through the “fair” freely, for around a hour. Each student produced a poster which touched on a somewhat taboo subject or a subject that had some type of stigma attached to it, but they were generally just subjects that the students had an interest towards. The posters include five or more media types that the subject was depicted through and the student talked about the medias perspective, audience and features on the subject.  Each student chose a different subject and the varying topics were really interesting and gave students the chance to further their knowledge on subjects you wouldn’t necessarily be taught about in class.

A Glance Into the Media Fair

HAPPA #HALFIE (Caycee)

Caycee talked about halfies(two races) mainly those who are both Japanese and another race. She talked about the stigma in Japan of h13393315_1400216700003736_406159504_nalfies and how many people seem to glamorize halfies and think that all halfies are beautiful, long legged models, but at the same time how they aren’t really accepted by some people in Japanese society and are not thought of to truly be Japanese. Also touching on her own personal experiences as a halfie in Japan and the times she has been mistreated by some Japanese people. Caycee depicted this through the analysis of a poster, trailer, documentary. article, and a form of social media. Personally I thought this was a pretty interesting subject as many people at YIS could relate to this including myself and I was able to really resonate with what she was talking about.

SCHOOL UNIFORMS (Megan)

School Uniforms, a pretty touched upon subject that many have a hard time deciding upon due to the many pros and cons of the topic. Megan analyzed five different media types which included an article, movie, posters , a political

cartoon and opinion editorial written by Emma Jacobs. Through the analysis of these media types she was able to conclude that there is always going to the fight or to wear or not to wear school uniforms. One of the main things she talked about was how many people believe that school uniforms help to eliminate the views of clothing dictating social status and “covering” popularity, but how school uniforms don’t always successfully do that. Though YIS doesn’t have school uniforms anymore it was something that they once had and were probably “fought” against.

STAY AT HOME DADS (Alina)

I found Alina’s topic on of the most unique out of the ones that I saw as it wasn’t really a topic that I ever really thought about though it does have a pretty big taboo in society as women are usually the ones who are stay at home moms and dads get somewhat ridiculed for it. Alina highlighted that many people think that the only reason a man is a stay at home dad is because of him losing his job or not having as successful of a career as the women in the relationship though that is usually not the case.
